Winter protection of roses

To protect roses from winter influences, it is a good idea to mound your roses with soil.

You can do this by moving the soil that is around the rose up to the center of the rose to a height of about 10 to 15 cm.

In the resulting cavities, you can then spread old, perennial farmyard manure or dried cow manure pellets and/or compost.

If you are using cow manure pellets for supplemental fertilization, it is wise to also cover the soil with compost or leaves ( crushed garden waste ) to counteract soil weathering.

Covering the roses should definitely not be done too early because you will “spoil” the roses too much and then there is a chance that the roses will be too sensitive and fragile.

Late November, early December is usually a greyat time to start this.

In the spring when the worst of the frost is over or when the spring pruning takes place (around late February/early March the mound is removed and this soil can then be mixed back in with the manure and compost.

It is better for the rose, when mounding, not to take the soil that is around the rose, but to take it from elsewhere in your garden.
The structure of the soil layers will then not be disturbed and any high roots and young hair roots will not be damaged.

Stem roses have the oculation site high above the ground.

If a severe frost is predicted, you can protect the excavation site by wrapping straw, burlap, pine branches or conifer greyenery around it.

You can also put a plastic bag around the crown, however, the problem on warmer or sunny days is that the temperature inside the bag can rise and therefore there is a chance that the rose will sprout too early and then actually freeze.
